Loving Others Like Jesus
And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.*
Reaching beyond ourselves to live Outward
In the Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary, we read…
MINISTER, MINISTRY One who serves another. God’s call to Abram (Gen. 12) contains the foundations of ministry. God’s promise was to begin with Abram and Sarai and from them make a nation God would bless, which would be a blessing to all nations. The English words “minister” or “ministry” appear as translation of the Hebrew word sharat that literally means “to wait on” or “serve” as Joseph did for Potiphar (Gen. 39:4; Exod. 24:13; 1 Sam. 2:11). A related Hebrew word is ebed which has a more general meaning than sharat. Ebed can mean “work” or “work the ground.”**
Jesus tells his followers a story about Sheep and Goats. You know the story, right? Matthew 25, starting at verse 21, Jesus talks about the day of judgement. And on that day he will gather the nations together, and then separate the people, as a shepherd separates the goats from the sheep. To the right go the sheep. To the left, the goats.
To the sheep he will say,
Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
But the people on the right were like, “Wait, what? Jesus when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, a stranger or naked, when were you sick or in prison…" And he [ JESUS ] will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
Then he will turn to the left, the goats, and he will say…
Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’
Ministry is all about serving someone else.
Ministry is caring for and meeting the need of those around you.
Ministry is what we are called to as we utilize our gifts, talents, time, and resources.
How we serve, care for, utilize our gifts, and meet the needs of others is how we live Outward.
Hickory Church invites you to come and join us as we move Outward, to reach those in need of God's love and grace. Visit the links at the upper right to learn how we are moving Outward.
